課程概述 |
This course will introduce students in the CE translation program to translation, both CE and EC, using translation techniques on a variety of text types. |
|
課程目標 |
1. Eliminate basic English grammatical errors.
2. Learn basic syntactical, literary and rhetorical analysis.
3. Apply #2 to CE/EC translation.
4. Develop a sense of professionalism, which is to say principled survival strategies and an understanding of the role a translator plays in society. |

課程要求 |
1. Come to class, hand in the translation, etc. on time.
2. Eliminate basic mistakes.
3. No plagiarism, including of Google Translate (rewarded with an immediate 0 in the course).
4. No web-surfing via laptop or cell phone. |

LIU&PELLATT, Thinking Chinese Translation.
YE&SHI, Introducing Chinese English Translation.
BAKER, In Other Words: A Coursebook in Translation. Routledge, 2011. This is a classic text, quite straightforward, built around "levels of equivalence". The latest edition has a new chapter on ethics, on the largest level: the translator in society. Check Shulin. There is a CHINESE TRANSLATION.
PYM, Exploring Translation Theories. This is very advanced, but a good challenge if you are considering going on to do translation research.

Quizzes at the beginning and end of class; Midterm and final |

The quiz will be on whatever we did the previous week, and at first will be repeated at the beginning and end of class, until you all achieve perfection, at which point we may drop the quizzes or base them on something else. The midterm will cover homeworks up to the midterm, the final from the midterm to the final. |

Weekly translations |
40% |
10 weekly translations, on time, accurate, in good English/Chinese. We will do a variety of authentic translation cases. You'll take charge one of the weeks. |

Self-monitoring |
30% |
EAT, midterm and final report (including two analyses, of a certain error and a certain technique). |
